So I have an Antec 300 and was looking at the front where the drive bays are. I have one hard drive and one cd drive. The rest is just wasted space. I was thinking of doing this.
(Bad shop, I know)
The Nvidia gtx 480 is the same length as my current card so there would be no problem with upgrades. I was thinking I could buy a 2.5 laptop drive and buy an adapter to mount that in a pci slot and fit the CD drive somewhere or buy an external. Should I go for it?

the question is....why? you running outta space in your room? if you were to get a GTX 480 that sucka will want some space around it with some good airflow...as those run hot as hell.
Just seems like it would be a lot of work will no real benefit other than a smaller tower.

I don't know, just thought it would be cool, one of a kind. Airflow wouldn't be an issue as there would still be room to mount 2 120mm fans in that front grill and they would be closer to the card. For some reason I like doing shit like this. 3 weeks ago I ordered a new casing for my psp just so the back would be black and the front would be white. I had to take the whole thing apart.
One more thing I was thinking is, that if you ever wanted to upgrade your rig with a blue ray drive or more hard drives for storage you'd havta get external ones. Also some aftermarket RAM coolers might need that room if you went that route.
Bottom line is if ya want to do it then do it...I just dont see the point...it's modding it yes, but only to the point where it is smaller, which in my opinion, doesn't mean better or cooler.
Why not take it apart and paint it or even cut a window in the side of it. Or You could add water cooling with radiators and tubes with colored water or some crazy shit like that...just ideas here.

Yea, those are things to think about. I only payed $40 for the case a year ago. It wouldn't be to much of a loss but I am going to get my dad to help so I'll post pics whenever I'm finished. 480's don't run as hot as people say they do. I have a friend who has 2 480s in SLI and they never got above 75c with an overclock. They overclock like monsters. He switched to liquid cooling because he has a SFF case and broke a 480 in the process. It's pretty much a case just big enough for a micro atx board.

Yea, he was removing the old heatsink to put the waterblock on it. He said the screws were in really tight and snapped the tip of the screw driver off which caused him to stab the pcb and 3 of the 1mm long chips got broke off.

Don't know when we will get around to it, it may be a little while.
